Meaning in EUGRIS: Estonia is a parliamentary republic with 15 counties. After centuries of Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940, it regained its freedom in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Estonia covers an area of 45,226 square kilometres and has a population of 1.3 million. The capital is Tallinn. Since May 2004 Estonia is a member of the European Union.
