Glossary entry:Lithuania
Meaning in EUGRIS: Lithuania is a parliamentary democracy with 10 counties. Independent between the two World Wars, Lithuania was annexed by the USSR in 1940. In 1990, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence, but Moscow did not recognize this proclamation until September of 1991. Lithuania covers an area of 65,200 square kilometres and has a population of 3.6 million. The capital is Vilnius. Since May 2004 Lithuania is a member of the European Union.
