Glossary entry:Malta
Meaning in EUGRIS: Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. It became independent in 1964. A decade later the island became a republic. Malta covers an area of 316 square kilometres and has a population of 0.39 million. The capital is Valletta. Since May 2004 Malta is a member of the European Union.
