Glossary entry:Moldova
Meaning in EUGRIS: Formerly ruled by Romania, Moldova became part of the Soviet Union at the close of World War II. Although independent from the USSR since 1991, Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory. The poorest nation in Europe, the Republic of Moldova became the first former Soviet state to elect a Communist as its president in 2001. Moldova covers an area of 33,843 square kilometres and has a population of 4.4 million. The capital is Chisinau. Moldova is no member of the European Union.
