Meaning in EUGRIS: The republic of Poland consists of 16 provinces. Poland gained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite country following the war, but one that was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Poland covers an area of 312,685 square kilometres and has a population of 39 million. The capital is Warsaw. Since May 2004 Poland is a member of the European Union.
