Long Description:
The programme 'Research for the Environment' (in German 'Forschung für die Umwelt' ) strives to initiate innovations in economy and society that contribute
to guaranteeing a high quality of human life in an environment with a functional ecosystem. With its attempt to include the whole spectrum of possibilities for improving the environmental situation by innovative knowledge and technological innovations,
the programme 'research for the environment' goes beyond the programme 'environmental research and environmental technologies' which ended in 1994. Its
main objective is to include man with his ethical, social, economic and cultural goals in a more comprehensive way and not to limit itself to the rather static
description of the environmental situation as a victim of human impact and to the development of post-closure environmental technologies. The environment
as living space of man has moved into the centre of the analysis. To understand and treat coherent elements as if they were truly coherent offers the chance to
design an environment capable of surviving in the future, characterized by sustainable development and preservation of resources. In order to better take into consideration man with his abilities and goals in the solution of environmental problems, the new programme 'research for the
environment' has to include a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines in a more comprehensive way than practiced so far. Interdisciplinary work becomes
a crucial promoting criterion.
