Long description: The Act on the Regulation of Matters Relating to Water of 1957 (Federal Water Act (WHG), last amended in 2001), as a framework law of the Federal Government, lays down basic provisions relating to water resources management measures (management of water quantity and quality). It requires that waters are to be safeguarded as a component of the natural balance and as a habitat for fauna and flora. Under the Federal Water Act, waters are to be managed such that they serve the public well-being and, in harmony therewith, the interests of individuals, and that avoidable impairments of their ecological functions are to be avoided (precautionary principle).
