Short description: A Canadian team of researchers has studied the potential of using Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) technology for the remediation of PCB-contaminated soils. This technology has the advantage of using high-velocity air to entrain circulating solids and create a highly turbulent combustion zone, thus providing very good solid mixing and gas-solid contact. To this end, the researchers collected data at a CFBC pilot- plant built in Canada. As it is not permitted to incinerate high-PCB containing materials in this pilot-plant, due to safety regulations in the lab, they tested the CFBC technology with sands contaminated by a surrogate compound dichlorobenzene (DBC). At this pilot-plant, the researchers demonstrated that: *The destruction and removal efficiency of CFBC technology reaches 99.99995% to 99.99999%, depending on the contamination level in the input materials (sands and liquids). *The combustion efficiency of the plant is above 99.9%.
