Long description: This paper describes the work undertaken to develop and optimize a fully automated on-line solid-phase extraction-liquid chromatography–electrospray–tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC–ESI-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous determination of 17 medium to polar pesticides in water. Analytes included organophosphates, triazines, phenylureas, anilides, chloroacetanilides, acidic herbicides and thiocarbamates. The method was applied to water samples collected at 14 locations in the Ebro river delta.
