Project objectives:
The project aimed to develop a general chemical model for the interaction of benchmark pollutants (organic and inorganic) with soils, taking into account the ionic composition and pH of the solution.
|
Project
Summary:
The structural and spatial behaviour of the soil bulk matrix was assessed and a conceptual model developed. Behaviour of two different types of contaminants were investigated, heavy metals (Cu & Cd) and PAHs (anthracene, pyrene, benzopyrene and benzo(ghi)perylene). The study site was characterised as a sandy soil with significant organic and inorganic pollution. Different experiments aimed to elucidate sorption equilibria and kinetics, to quantify transport in laboratory soil columns and to adaopt a soil simulator to relevant pollution systems. Experimental data fed into the development of simulation tools for multicomponent, multiphase transport in porous media
