Coordinated projects on mechanisms, quantification and impact of pollution generated from existing and abandoned waste disposal sites

Country: EU Projects
Start Date:   1/3/1991         Duration: 34 months         Project Type: RTD
Contract Number: STEP-CT900070
Organisation Type:  University research group / research institute
Topics:
Brownfields
Contaminated land-->Contaminated land overview
Contaminated land-->stats, registers, inventories etc
Diffuse pollution-->Diffuse pollution overview
Diffuse pollution-->Monitoring
Project objectives:
To acquire a better knowledge of mechanisms of reaction kinetics of processes generating diffuse pollution from existing and abandoned industrial sites
receiving toxic waste in order to assess hazards linked with local situations, decision making for remediation and rehabilitation and the evaluation of different
alternatives for the design and management of industrial waste disposal sites.
Project Summary:
The project was in five parts:

1 Data compilation
2 Study of the generation of lanfill gases
3 Experimental study of the generation of soluble pollution from those disposal
4 Characterisation of the term 'pollution source' for providing the necessary data to the hazard and decision aking evaluation systems
5 Investigation of the long-term behaviour of landfills through a study of selected European industrial disposal sites
