Short description: This document provides the outline of the European Union Strategy for Sustainable Development, proposed in Helsinki in 1999. Key concerns in relation to sustainability were identified as greenhouse gases, public health, poverty, ageing population, loss of soil and biodiversity, waste, transport congestion and regional imbalances. Actions proposed included sustainable development to be considered in all future policy making and the preparation of an action plan to achieve improvement towards sustainability targets.
