Project objectives:
The present project is focused to throw light into this problem by identifying the contamination trends of these pollutants (including chemical speciation and metal mobility factors) as well as to determine the efficiency of the remediation processes that are applied to such a contaminated sites.
To accomplish for these objectives, the research activities have been planned as follows. The project will develop and validate novel selective and robust sensing devices, including chemical sensors and biosensors and biomimetic systems for on-line operation and real time measurements of THM (Toxic Heavy Metals) present in contaminated soils, groundwaters and surface waters. This general contribution will be accomplished by the specific investigations:
- Elaboration and validation of electrochemical biosensors/immunosensors and screen-printed electrodes for analysis of THM in contaminated soil, surface waters and groundwaters
- Determination of THM chemical speciation and its trends of contamination.
- Designing and construction of a portable detection system for THM determination
- Integration of the data generated by the new devices into a decision taking scheme based on GIS (Geographical Information System) to provide a more accurate and inexpensive risk assessment.

Project
Summary:
This project is one of the two project integrating the cluster 'Decontamination of ground waters and soils from heavy metals'. The present project is addressed to develop sensitive and robust sensing devices, including chemical sensors and biosensors, and biomimetic systems that are capable of on-line operation and real time measurements of THM, their effects and the corresponding risk assessment for various matrices of contained soils, groundwater bodies and surface waters. The project main goal is to identify the trends of pollution and control the efficiency of remediation activities. Such an objective will be carried out by developing electrochemical biosensors/immunosensors and screen-printed electrodes for stripping voltammetric analysis of heavy metal contamination, emphasising the determination of the chemical speciation of these contaminants. A portable system for heavy metal detection in contaminated soil and groundwater matrices will be also designed and constructed.
