Project objectives:
SEDNET will provide a European platform where organisations responsible for the sustainable management of river basin/fresh water body related sediments and dredged material (problem owners) can meet and communicate with organisations (problems solvers) that help to provide solutions to their problems, in the form of tools, knowledge, technologies and expertise needed for that management. This platform will support, catalyse, optimise or facilitate: (1) demand driven research activities, (2) exchange of information between these activities, (3) co-operation between problem solvers and problem owners, (4) dissemination to, and exploitation of knowledge by problem owners, (5) publication of research results and (6) inform public and decision-makers. Furthermore, SEDNET aims to complement existing EU networks and thematic working groups and aims to be an advisory board to European, national and regional authorities on sediment issues, and indirectly assist with their policy implementation
|
Project
Summary:
Sediments mainly got local attention of water managers confronted with man-made sediment-traps, especially when associated contamination poses an environmental or human risk. More and more managers, port authorities and researchers express the need to exchange, at least at river basin level, these local experiences and to develop sediment management guidelines based on a multidisciplinary, co-ordinated and harmonised approach. Due to the trans-boundary nature, no single water manager or country has the responsibility for solving sediment management problems at river basin level.
SEDNET will provide an international platform to facilitate information and knowledge exchange and to produce a joint document, containing recommendations and guidelines for integrated, sustainable management of sediment, from local to river basin level.
|
Achieved Objectives:
The SedNet mission is to be a European network for environmentally, socially and economically viable practices of sediment management on river basin scales. Due to the trans-boundary nature, no single water manager or country has the responsibility of solving sediment management problems at such a scale. SedNet is established to help to structure and facilitate a European approach on this issue.
SedNet, amongst others, organises conferences and workshops where those responsible for the management of riverine sediments and dredged material can meet the experts who provide them with the demanded management tools, technologies and expertise. The knowledge thus disseminated will be cumulated into a guideline for integrated, sustainable sediment management, from local to river basin level.
