Harmoni-CA Harmonised Modelling Tools for Integrated River Basin Management. WP4:Joint use of monitoring and modelling

Country: EU Projects
Start Date:   1/10/2002         Duration: 60 months         Project Type: Concerted Action
Contract Number: EVK1-CT-2002-2003
Organisation Type:  EC Project
Topics:
Water resources and their management -->Water resources and their management Overview
Project objectives:
To bridge the gab between the monitoring and the modelling community and between science and practical implementation
To develop a guidance on good practice in joint use of monitoring and modelling

Project Summary:
5 workshops targetted European water managers have been arranged on the issue and the ideas behind joint use of monitoring and modelling have been presented
and elaborated.
Achieved Objectives:
The workshops have resulted in good networking and exchange of ideas. Experiences and good examples have given participants inspirations to bring back home.
A guidance on good practice in joint use of monitoring and modelling has been develop as well as a synthesis report on data availability and accessibility
Product Descriptions:
CatchMod Modelling Guidance: 'Good practice in joint use of monitoring and modelling'
Description: Much can be gained in terms of knowledge, understanding and costs by combining monitoring and modelling. The objective of this guidance is
to support joint monitoring and modelling, hence creating added value for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. Water managers can use this document to bridge the gap between monitoring and modelling and thereby create added value for the water authority. Water managers
are the target audience of the document together with monitoring specialists who will get insight into the data issues of modellers, and can read how models
can support their monitoring strategies Modellers will find an overview on the demands for data collection in the WFD and straight forward guidelines on where and when they should offer their support.
Available at:http://www.harmoni-ca.info/products/ Synthesis report: Data availability and accessibility: State of the art on existing data required for modelling for research purposes and for the implementation
of the Water Framework Directive: Description: Sufficient data availability and accessibility is a key factor for successful joint monitoring and modelling. The question if there are sufficient
data for modelling is however not straightforward to answer, and the repeating discussions are frequently clouded by misunderstandings. Hence, this synthesis
report aims to put the “Sufficient data availability and accessibility” into perspective. Recommendations presented in this leaflet are underpinned in the report. Researchers and data providers may use this report as a basis for reaching common
understanding. Water managers and policy makers may find this report useful to initiate discussions to improve solve data availability and accessibility
problems. Available at:http://www.harmoni-ca.info/products/
