Organisation Outline:
The London Development Agency prepares the Mayor's business plan for London and mobilises the support and resources of hundreds of partner organisations
to help build a thriving economy for London's people, businesses and communities. The LDA is dedicated to improving sustainability, health and equality of
opportunity for Londoners.
The LDA aims to promote the capital as a prime location for foreign investment, support partnerships, effective business links and companies directly,
develop the skills base, target growth industries, equality and diversity, fund infrastructure development, provide business retention and aftercare
and support social enterprises.
The LDA supports the capital's business communities by focusing on key industries and encouraging sustainable economic growth and innovation. As well
as assisitng specific industry sectors, the LDA works in partnership to offer more general support. During 2003 the Agency established an action-led, London-wide
business team to support companies and to provide business retention and aftercare. The LDA website provides information about business funding, help for
small and medium sized enterprises, details on social enterprises, innovation and inward investment.
The LDA delivers economic development via a programme of commissioned projects with resources being allocated through a Single Programme fund. The LDA
works in partnership with a number of organisations including other members of the GLA Group, Charter Partners, the Government, other Regional Development
Agencies and regional groups. Projects open to tender are advertised on the LDA website under Current contract vacancies.
The LDA has funded or co-funded several brownfield regeneration projects. For example: (1) The Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, a disused and formerly contaminated
site is being transformed into a mixed-use development; (2) The White Hart Triangle project, a 52 acre site of previously derelict land situated between Thamesmead
and Woolwich, is driven by the LDA in partnership with Tilfen Land and Greenwich Council; (3) Hothouse, a derelict and contaminated brown-field site and adjacent
railway arches London Fields in Hackney, has been transformed into a vibrant new ‘creative cluster’ of artists and design professionals; (4) Barking Reach,
300 hectares of mainly derelict brownfield land, adjacent to the River Thames and south of the A13 and the London-Tilbury-Southend railway line is to be reclaimed
and used for housing.
