Organisation Outline:
The SGM provides a common meeting ground for scientists working in research and in fields with applications in microbiology, including medicine, veterinary
medicine, pharmaceuticals, numerous industries, agriculture, food, the environment and education. The majority of members are employees of universities,
research institutes, health services, government agencies and small to multinational companies. The Society caters for the different areas of modern microbiology through 12 special interest Groups and one regional Branch. The main business of the Groups
is to propose and set up scientific meetings and symposia. The special interest of the Environmental Microbiology Group is the biology of microorganisms both
in their natural habitats (including groundwater) and introduced into novel habitats. Membership of SGM is open to anyone with a proven interest in microbiology: no special qualifications are needed. The Society publishes four journals of research papers and topical review articles: International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology;
Journal of General Virology; Journal of Medical Microbiology and Microbiology Today.
