Organisation Outline:
The National Library of Scotland holdings include eight million printed books, 120,000 volumes of manuscripts, around two million maps, and over 20,000 newspaper
and magazine titles. The National Library of Scotland has the largest map collection in Scotland and is one of the biggest in the world, with around two million cartographic items.
These include over 1.5 million sheet maps, 15,000 atlases, 100,000 maps on microfilm and more than 250,000 digital maps. They also have gazetteers, cartographic
reference books and periodicals, and map ephemera. The Library's holdings cover all parts of the world, through some 700 years, from medieval manuscript maps to current digital mapping. It is possible to search for maps using the main catalogue, but the most direct way to browse a selection of significant Scottish maps (1560-1900) is through
the ‘Maps feature’ in the Digital Library. This has a comprehensive search facility and many maps can be viewed on-line.
