Organisation Outline:
A multidicsiplinary research group, tackling issues in WASTE and POLLUTION management, earth sciences and the built environment

We specialise in laboratory and field scale investigations of diverse wastes, contaminated soils and sediments. The identification of contaminants, 
understanding their mobility, sampling protocols, risk assessment and remediation technologies. Our research for the newspaper industry looks at the whole newspaper recycling loop - from the psychology of the recycler and the marketing of waste paper
to the chemistry and composting of recycling residues. We research the urban water environment and the environmental impact on heritage buildings. At the Interface of SOCIAL SCIENCE and ENGINEERING, we have: Developed Simulation Models to: - Predict recycling behaviour - Predict environmental performance - Predict environmental impact - Predict recycling markets Undertaken research into barriers to knowledge capture and management. Developed a generic, www-based consultation tool, to provide transparent, high participation responses in environmental debates. Our FACILITIES include: An 8,000 litre climate controlled 'Enviro-tank' for large scale experiments A 500 kg/week flow-through in-vessel composter A Newly equipped GIS laboratory and state of the art chemical analysis The Environmental Initiatives Research Group, in the School of Engineering and Science, is coordinated by Professors Peter Tucker and Andrew Hursthouse.
