Organisation Outline:
Aberdeen Centre Enviromental Sustainability (ACES) carries out research focusing on two research themes: Environmental Degradation and Ecosystem Restoration and Sustaining Biodiversity and Livelihoods. The former includes topics such as diffuse pollution, remediation of waste, land & water use and the management of European grazing systems. The latter focuses on finding management solutions to biodiversity conflicts at a range of scales from species scale to landscape scale. A computer-based tutorial (BIOVENT) covering the principles of bioventing (bioremediation of contaminants in unsaturated soils using air injection or extraction) is available from the Centre for Computer Based Learning in Land Use and Environmental Sciences (CLUES), The University of Aberdeen. It provides information on the underlying principles of bioventing, when it can be applied and the factors affecting performance, with an outline of the design and implementation of a bioventing system. The program has four main areas: Introduction, About Bioventing, Use of Bioventing and System Design and Operation. Animation and calculations are used to illustrate key concepts.
