Organisation Outline:
The Centre for Environmental Research and Training (CERT) promotes interdisciplinary research in key environmental issues and co-ordinates projects linking staff across a range of Schools. It supports around 150 academic staff actively engaged in a broad range of environmental disciplines, with particular expertise in the areas of water resources, air pollution, environmental risk and public health and environmental process engineering. CERT research attracts funding from national and international organisations, including the Research Councils, UK government, the European Commission and the World Bank. The Centre co-ordinates research in risk management, focusing particularly on the application of risk assessment and related assessment tools to risk management decisions, the communication of risk and the involvement of the public in risk management decisions. http://www.cert.bham.ac.uk/about/
Areas of research within The School of Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences include the Hydrogeology Research Group (concerned with identifying and quantifying the physical and chemical processes governing the movement and fate of contaminants in groundwater systems) and Environmental Risk & Policy Processes Specialisms (environmental governance; public attitudes to the environment, sustainability and risk and impact on behaviour; enhancing public involvement in decision-making; environmental evaluation).
