ACUMEN Assessing, Capturing and Utilising Methane from Expired and Non-operational landfills

Country: EU Projects
Start Date:   30/9/2012         Duration: 37 months         Project Type: Demonstration
Contract Number:
Organisation Type:  EC Project
Topics:
Brownfields
Contaminated land-->Remediation options-->In situ treatment technologies
Contaminated land-->Risk management-->Risk management overview
Project objectives:
ACUMEN aims to provide a range of tools and techniques to landfill owners to help them assess the options for managing methane at their sites. We also hope to provide
technical guidance to help site owners replicate the ACUMEN demonstrations at their own landfills. Our ultimate aim is to enable landfill owners to make the best possible use of the resource their landfills present.
Project Summary:
ACUMEN is a partnership project part-funded under the climate change strand of the EU’s LIFE+ environment programme. The project also receives funding from
the Department of Energy and Climate Change and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the other participating organisations. The
project aims to demonstrate new techniques and technologies to improve the capture and use of methane from closed and historic landfills. We will do this by
demonstrating the new approaches on closed landfill sites for at least 12 months. The project began in September 2012, and will finish in September 2015.
