Natural attenuation 
         

The German funding priority KORA of the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) started in summer 2002. KORA was prepared and will be managed by the 
project management organisations:         
PT Wt+E (Project Agency for Water Technology and Waste Management) and         
PTJ (Project Agency Jülich, for environmental projects.         
The objective of the German funding priority KORA (Retention and Degradation Processes Reducing Contaminants in Groundwater and Soil) is to investigate 
at selected contaminated sites the intrinsic retention and degradation processes, which lead to a reduction of contaminants in groundwater and soil. The 
aim of KORA is to develop technical and legal instruments which will facilitate the evaluation and customised use of these processes in the risk assessment 
and remediation of contaminated sites. Part of these instruments are scientific methods as well as socio-economic, organisational, and legal requirements. 
Based on the results, a recommendation handbook and some technical guidelines will be prepared, which will help to implement natural attenuation processes 
in remediation. To ensure applicability, the funding priority is accompanied by a steering committee with members from federal and provincial government 
departments as well as from professional societies and industry. The projects of KORA are organised in eight Thematic Networks and supported by the KORA management.
