Project objectives:
To determine the role of colloids in contaminant transport at several shallow groundwater sites in the UK and Germany by 1) developing a cost-effectove sampling and analytical protocal for characterisation of polluted sites 2) developing effective guidelines for recognition of significance of colloids in the transport of colloid-associated heavy metal transport 3) assessing the implications of colloidal heavy metal transport fro remediation strategies.

Project
Summary:
The project consisted of seven tasks:
1: Collation of existing data
2: Field monitoring and sampling of water, colloids and solids
3: Geophysical characterisation of sites
4: Sample analysis and physico-chemical characterisation of groundwater colloids
5: Laboratory studies of metal-associated colloid transport through relevant solid matrix materials in column and batch experiments
6: Modelling of contaminant transport in the presence of colloids
7: Project co-ordination reporting and recommendations
