STABLE Controlled treatment of TBT-contaminated dredged sediments for their beneficial use in infrastructure projects
|
Country: Finland
|
Start Date:
1/4/2006
Duration: 36
months
Project Type: Demonstration
|
Contract Number: LIFE06/ENV/FIN/000195
|
Organisation Type:
Consultancy, contractor or other service provider |
Topics:
Sediments
|
Project objectives:
The project aims to demonstrate technically, economically and environmentally viable treatment methods for dredged materials. It is intended that once treated the material should be of sufficient quality to be used in infrastructure projects such as harbour extensions.
|
Project
Summary:
It is estimated that 200 million cubic metres of sediment are dredged from river channels in the EU each year. Much of this material is contaminated, in particular by the now banned antifoulant tributyltin (TBT). The development of a viable treatment process for these sediments would alleviate a significant waste disposal problem and provide an alternative to raw materials within the site of the dredging process.
