Long description: The application of in situ technologies for the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater can offer significant advantages over alternatives when the cost-benefits of treatment are fully quantified and the technical issues are properly assessed. This paper reviews the categories of in situ remediation technologies (including natural attenuation), the principles underlying their use and the framework within which their application is most appropriate. Particular emphasis is placed on the relevance of in situ remediation in the context of contaminated land risk assessment and sustainable development
