Short description: Extract: 'The results of a scoping study which has been undertaken to provide a Comprehensive review of the issues associated with the costs and benefits of the remediation of contaminated groundwater and the future protection of groundwater are presented. An overview of contaminant hydrogeology, groundwater remediation and environmental economics is provided. The philosophical, technical and economic issues associated with cost-benefit analysis of groundwater protection and remediation are discussed. Suggestions for the formulation of framework guidance for setting remedial objectives and selecting the best approach and technologies on a site-specific basis are made. There are 64 references.'
