Short description: The 6th Framework Programme (FP6) for Research, Technology Development and Demonstration with its sub-priority “Global Change and Ecosystems” covers under the issue “The Water Cycle and Soil-related Aspects” numerous aspects for which the findings and results of FP5 projects must be of highest relevance. The workshop therefore accompanies the transition from FP5 to FP6 and will highlight new projects and future perspectives for an integrated management of soil and water resources.
Long description: The main objectives of the workshop are • to review and optimise strategies and tools for an improved dissemination and implementation of research results and new products • to inform about new activities in FP6 • to specify ways how to integrate soil and sediments in the management of river basins • to present and discuss future short, medium and long-term priority research tasks to pave the way for a holistic approach to the management of soil and water resources under climate change The workshop will directly pick up the thread of the EU workshop held in Orléans in November 2003. While there was a seamless account of all FP5 projects belonging to the action line “Prevention of Pollution” within the key action “Management and Quality of Water” in Orléans, the first part of the upcoming workshop in Bonn will focus on dissemination strategies of project results. The main emphasis of the second part will be on future developments that deal with the water-soil-system at river-basin scale under changing climatic conditions. In this context, dealing with contaminated sites and local groundwater problems will only be a minor aspect of the very complex integrated management of soil and water resources. Nevertheless, it is a challenge for the scientific community as well as national or municipal authorities and problem-solvers in the field to find constructive and new ways to put the visions of integrated management in concrete terms and tasks to be fulfilled. The explicit aim of the third part of the workshop is to channel information on current activities related to the 3rd call for proposals of FP6 expected for mid-June. The presentations foreseen will illustrate some of the main topics to be covered and facilitate a discussion to be used for partner search related to the this call.
