At many contaminated sites unidentified or imprecisely located pollutant hot spots, as well as preferential transport paths and low conductivity zones within the aquifer cause irregular distribution of contaminants in groundwater. An accurate on site investigation would be a very costly exercise, therefore, a new integral investigation method for the characterization of groundwater contamination was developed. The method is based on an estimate of total contaminant mass flow rates and concentrations over a control plane within a contaminant plume downstream of a pollutant source. The use of at least two control planes downstream of a contaminant source zone also allows the estimation of natural attenuation rates at field scale. This paper outlines the principles of the integral investigation are described, and some examples of application at field scale are presented.
