Short description: Release of crude oil and derivative products are the most common source of both catastrophic and chronic pollution problems in the ocean, lakes, rivers, soils and groundwater. When soils became saturated with released fuel, the hydrocarbon components migrate to groundwater, giving an opportunity for the mixing of different hydrocarbon product plumes from different sources. Characterising such a fuel mixture is a challenge. The paper describes chemical fingerprinting techniques as a means of distinguishing individual sources and characterizing the composition of complex hydrocarbon pollution.
