Short description: |
In many European countries, agricultural management has been intensified over the last century leading to increased production but also to negative environmental effects. Today, a surplus of grain and in some cases a shortage of timber has caused several EU countries have decided to changge land use back to forestry. Other issues related to tree planting include carbon sequestration. Thes guidelines were developed based on a literature review and the experimental data from chronosequences of afforested stands in Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The structure is based on 26 questions and corresponding
answers under the main themes of water recharge, nitrate leaching, carbon sequestration, diversity of understory vegetation, and complex questions involving more than one of the first three issues. It is our hope that these guidelines in combination with the AFFORESTsDSS will be helpful and inspire landscape and forest planners in planning how and where afforestation should take place.
