Water resources and their management -->Water resources and their management Overview

Short description: |
A series of laboratory and field scale experiments will be carried out to increase the understanding of the role of lithological and fracture heterogeneity, and to determine effective parameters. These experiments will provide direct information on the pathways and velocities taken by contaminants through the aquifer, on density-dependent flows, and on changes in the permeability structure induced by physico-chemical processes, for incorporation in the WP3 numerical models.
|
Long description: |
The types of experiments to be performed here are unique in their emphasis on transport due to saline intrusion, in heterogeneous and fractured formations, with a view to obtaining quantitative relationships and parameter values that can be used with the models developed in WP3. In particular, the field-scale studies at the selected aquifer sites will involve borehole dilution and borehole-to-borehole tracer tests, using electrically conductive and bacterial tracers, to obtain high-resolution information on transport pathways, flow channel dimensions and residence times. Surface-based resistivity surveys will be used, where appropriate, to identify lithological heterogeneities, to detect the location of saltwater- freshwater interfaces, and to follow the migration of conductive tracers such as Bromide.
