Short description: Populus nigra L. var betulifolia and Salix alba L. var alba are threatened throughout Europe due to changes to the physical processes affecting their natural habitat. River management has signicantly affected river flow and sediment delivery, which has affected the sexual and asexual regeneration of these species. This paper examines the effect of floodplain processes on regeneration through a field survey of the relative abundance and spatial distributions of P. nigra and S. alba during the first years of establishment along a braided gravel bed river.
