Short description: |
The impacts of the variable hydrological conditions of riparian woodlads were assessed by assessing water uptake in trees using a novel tequnique for the rapid extraction of xylem sap. The machine developed is capable of extracting sap directly in the field from wood cores in a few minutes. A description of both the machine and its performance is provided, along with early experimental results comparing the vertical water profile of the soil and the corresponding xylem sap at different roots horizons and in the trunk of trees in a young riparian woodland beside the Garonne River.
