Short description: |
Stable oxygen isotopes can be used to trace the origin of water used by trees in the riparian zones of rivers in temperate regions
|
Long description: |
In temperate regions, the ribbon of vegetation in riparian zones is typically dominated by deciduous trees reflecting the influence of human activities. Such woodlands depend have to be capable of adapting to rapid changes in water levels and soil moisture conditions. The three main water sources are typically river water originating in the mountains, groundwater and rainfall. Stable isotopes, such as oxygen-18, can identify different water sources and thus can be used be used to trace water movement within the riparian zone, identifying the sources used by the trees growing in these areas.
