Short description: |
A combination of experimental and numerical analyses are used to examine the movement and interaction of saltwater and freshwater in unconfined porous media, with an emphasis on the partially saturated region. The laboratory experiments demonstrate that significant lateral flows and density-driven flow effects may take place in this zone. In parallel, a finite element numerical model has been developed, which effectively reproduces the observed flow; this suggests that the numerical model has the capacity to provide realistic predictions.
