Contaminated land and hazardous sites became generally recognised as a serious
environmental problem throughout Europe and the USA in the seventies. During the
eighties most industrial nations started efforts to systemise the decision-making
processes for the evaluation and – where necessary – the treatment of contaminated
land. A risk based decision-making process for site remediation is now the norm in
EU Member States.
