Short description: The roots of sustainability as a focus of concern lie in the emergence of a set of environmental challenges to our continued survival on the planet. Within the context of water policy, these challenges are exacerbated by the need to ensure reliable, safe, adequate water supplies to support the livelihoods of our communities. Many contemporary conceptual frameworks for investigating sustainable water management are informed by analogies taken from the biological and physical sciences. Taking co-evolutionary theory as a focus we describe its contribution to conceptual models of sustainable water management and discuss its strengths and weaknesses from both a descriptive and prescriptive standpoint.
