Short description: A test site was built to characterize the waste water, to investigate the sealing effect of the colmation layer, the exfiltration processes of leaky sewers and the removal efficiencies of the soil under operating conditions. Two artificial leaks (app. 20 cm² each) were created in an active 500 mm sewer. At the first leak exfiltration is continuously monitored by the use of a sand filled collector tank. Below the second leak a quasi-natural soil body has been equipped with suction cups, TDR probes and tensiometers and soil water samples are taken in regular intervals and in different depths to assess the purification potential of the unsaturated zone.
