Short description: The TRANSCAT project is concentrated on integrated water management by individual catchments, especially in transboundary catchments, where more problems usually occur. The main goal of the project is to create an operational and integrated comprehensive Decision Support System (DSS) for optimal water management of catchments in borderland regions. The proposed DSS will be able to cope with the complexity of the water resources systems and the uncertainty of decision-making. The DSS will be built around modules that allow simulation of the range of different climatic, topographic, environmental and socio-economic conditions found in various EU and candidate countries transboundary catchment areas. Objective of this report is to pinpoint existing systems, which are most suitable for Transcat DSS needs. Fourteen systems have been evaluated in the framework of Transcat WP3. Eight of the systems deals with hydrological issues, 6 with hydrogeological issues and 4 of the systems answer other issues. Systems have been intentionally chosen to cover all model situations in water management domain with varying input parameters. Software packages have also been chosen according to Transcat requirements, i.e. possibilities of integrating these applications into Transcat decision support system. In most cases, tutorial data provided by software developer (but in specific cases also real data) have been used for application testing. General evaluation of software packages which was prepared by this process will be useful for deciding in choosing appropriate modelling tools for Transcat DSS prototype, for choosing appropriate data, for following testing of Transcat prototype in pilot areas and last but not least for implementation of Transcat DSS. Evaluation and preparation of report have been coordinated by VSB – Technical University Ostrava. Participants involved in evaluation of software included VSB – Technical University Ostrava, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, InterConsult, Ruhr-University Bochum and System Research Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences. We would like to appreciate all authors and contributors who are listed in Authors section above. We were not able to achieve desired in-depth look into some of the systems due to limited time and limited access to these systems. The evaluation itself proceeded after finishing of retrieval study aimed at objectives and deliverables of present European systems concerning water management issues and extensive research of existing or currently developing systems. This retrieval study took place from October to December 2003. Results of the evaluation are presented in the Evaluated systems chapter. Overview of selected attributes of these systems is presented in the Summary chapter. Results of the evaluation are recapitulated and discussed in the Conclusion chapter. Authors will appreciate any comments and suggestions to the evaluation. We expect the evaluation to be furthermore developing and evolving, mainly in the framework of TransCat WorkPackage 5 and in the framework of TransCat DSS prototype development.
