Short description: Groundwater flow, groundwater resources availability and pollution are important aspects in water management. The groundwater resources constitute majority of fresh water available in Europe (except perpetual snow and glaciers, which play minor role in European water management plans). Due to chemical and biological features, groundwater is used as the main, and usually the only, source of drinking water as well as water used in ‘clean’ industry (e.g. medicines’ productions, food production and processing, hi-tech industry). Water stored under the Earth’s surface is also the significant part of the natural water cycle, main source of water for agriculture, forestry and natural habitats. However good the quality of groundwater may be, the groundwater resources require complex techniques (i.e. extra costs) to be utilised. To diminish these costs water managers have to be acquainted with water resources to be excavated, the aquifer thickness, dynamics of water movement and groundwater quality. Since the terrain research cost is relatively high, the groundwater mathematical models are frequently used as an additional tool in water management procedures.
