In epidemiological studies, specific neuropsychological functions have been oriented in the evaluation of neurotoxic effects of perinatal exposure to environmental levels of PCBs. First of all were studied sensomotor activities (reaction time, attention) and higher mental functions as memory and spatial skills. In 9 years old children study, the effects of perinatal exposure to PCBs were examined and deficits were found in neuropsychological functions: spatial perception, attention, memory processes and behavioral activities. The behavioral consequences were showed in children and in animal experiments of postnatal exposure to the PSB 153 congener, which is most frequently detected in human milk and serum. In the next study the behavior hyperactivity in rats following postnatal exposure to sub-toxic doses of PCB congeners 153, 126 and 180 were found. These results showed that these PCB congeners may produce significant neurotoxic effects following postnatal exposure through mother´s milk and early postnatal environmental exposure.
