During the recent war, the karst area of Croatia has been jeopardized by hazardous waste and deserves particular attention because of its exceptional ecological sensitivity and unfortunately unscrupulous destruction of natural resources, infrastructure, homes and enterprises. There are great fears and concrete evidence those significant quantities of polychlorinated biphenyls were released in the environment during warfare. Results of the analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls in soil from numeral locations (on some locations, on two depths), indicate significant contamination of the investigated area TS 110/35 kV - Zadar. It was reason for thoroughly investigation this site for levels of PCBs in soil samples around damaged capacitor. Because some samples show very high level of PCBs (even over 100 mg/kg) it was concluded to collected surface of the most polluted part of ground to investigate possibilities of remediation. The ability of some plant species to metabolise different organic contaminants of the environment is known, and in addition to attempts to improve the understanding of natural metabolic processes much effort is devoted to find conditions for exploitation of plants in biological remediation. The prerequisite for phytoremediation is the selection of proper species. Plants growing well at contaminated sites have to be tested if they are only resistant, or posses also ability to actively metabolise the contaminant in question. In such investigation one of the largest challenge is obtaining homogenous field for investigation, polluted with so absorbable pollutants as PCBs certainly are. It was reason to create experimental fields by using thoroughly mixed polluted soil in commercial large concrete mixer, capacity of 10 m3.
