The remediation of large-scale petroleum contamination at the former Soviet army air base Hradcany is one of important clean-up projects in the Czech Republic. The air base and its vicinity belong to the sedimentary complex of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, which forms part of the main groundwater supply of the Czech Republic. The presence of petroleum hydrocarbons (PH, mainly jet fuel) limits future use and revitalisation of the site and endangers groundwater resources.
