The present geneeration of geographical information systems (GIS), while ver sophisticated in some ways, are limited in terms of modelling physical processes such as the transport of water and pollutants through the physical system. Specific routing methods are needed in order to undertake these activities using GIS. The PCRaster Spatial Modelling language is a GIS that has been adapted to undertake physically-based water flow modelling. LISFLOOD is an example of a model developed using it. LISFLOOD simulates river discharge in a drainage basin as a function of topography, soil type and land cover. While this represents a major step forward there is still scope for significant development.
