Short description: |
'The environmental policy community needs to fight back against the take-over by the drive for competitiveness and economic growth in EU policy-making', that is the conclusion of a report launched by the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP).
Speaking at a meeting in the UK Parliament, David Wilkinson (Senior Fellow and co-author of the report), outlined how the EU's current preoccupation with the Lisbon agenda for growth and jobs threatens to undermine future environmental policy, and detracts from the development of policy that is truly 'better' all round (efficient, effective, transparent, and with balanced stakeholder involvement). The report provides a strong counter-argument to the messages coming from the CBI conference this week, that regulation is crippling UK industry; and similar calls from the 'Open Europe' group of industrialists for 'less', as opposed to 'better' regulation.
