Long description: |
In the course of evolution nature developed mechanisms bringing about a reduction of the pollution load. The naturally proceeding degradation processes have an enormous environmental pollution reducing potential. However, they do not achieve the desired success in every case in acceptable periods of time. Biological remediation techniques are based on natural degradation mechanisms but support them by means of techni-cal equipment. The development of biological remediation methods has proceeded fast in the 80’s to 90's of the 20th century in Germany, Europe, Canada and in the USA. In the meantime, biological techniques such as e.g. the micro-biological treatment of soils contaminated by mineral oil hydrocarbons range among reme-diation techniques spread most widely.
The manual of the German Federal Environment Agency published recently gives a review of the spectrum of different biological remediation techniques. Individual procedures are described in a compact form and fields of application with their respective advantages and drawbacks are outlined. A manual that helps making a balanced decision on the remediation of contaminated areas, if necessary in connection with revitalizing of areas, is made available to the reader from the public administration, the consulting and project development branch as well as to property owners .
