A cleanup of chlorinated solvents at a former industrial site in 1999- 2002 by combination of soil ventilation and steam injection and groundwater extraction has proved to be effective for both groundwater, soil air and soil. The report documents energy requirements, clean-up effectiveness, economy and side effects of cleanup.

Three different hot-spot areas, I, II and III were present at the site with contaminated areas of 2,000, 1,200 and 5,000 m² respectively. Approximately 97 % of the chlorinated solvents in the vadose zone and 93 % in the saturated zone (secondary aquifer) were removed. The technique was however not able to fully clean up the uppermost part of the clayey till deposits underlying the alluvial, which separate the primary aquifer in the limestone. During steam injection, a number of technical issues gave problems including choice of components for the treatment systems, choice of materials resistant to aggressive condition, need for effective liquid/air separation etc. filter sand and backfilling materials for the wells etc. Monitoring of the steam front in the soil and the progress of the remediation was performed by measurement of steam flow, water flow, and air flow in the treatment system as well as measurements of chlorinated solvents, oxygen, and carbon dioxide in the treatment system as well as measurements of soil temperatures by means of specially designed wells with thermocouples. In addition, measurements were carried out in the injection and extraction wells during the operation period using a specially designed temperature measurement system.
