The challenge for the working party was
to consider the types of research needed
to identify environmental causes of disease
when, for practical or ethical reasons, they
could not be experimentally investigated.
Inevitably, therefore, our attention had to be
focused on non-experimental studies observing
associations between specific risk features and
different disease outcomes. We considered
the strengths and limitations of such nonexperimental
studies and what steps can be
taken to reduce the uncertainties about their
supposed causal effects.
