Short description: Extract: In reviewing how effective the regime is, we have found that: • local authorities have considered less than 10% of their geographical areas; • a limited number of local authorities have formally determined contaminated land totalling around 800 sites. Most of these involve multiple determinations of individual house plots; • the majority of local authorities have not yet formally identified any contaminated land sites within their areas; and • of the Part 2A determined contaminated sites, less than 20% have been remediated over the last seven years. This has been at an estimated cost of some £21m, mainly to the public purse rather than the polluter.
